Project COURSE
Every year, Stanford-ESW sponsors a winter-spring course sequence called Current Topics in Sustainable Engineering and Design for a Sustainable World. We partner with international non-profits and NGOs to provide our students with hands-on engineering experiences. By enrolling in the course, you will work on one of the projects with a small project group and fearless team leader. Students will also have the opportunity to travel overseas to implement their team's designs.
Here are some of the projects that we are currently working on!
Here are some of the projects that we are currently working on!
Medic Mobile in a Box: Kenya
ESW-Stanford is partnering with Medic Mobile to develop a plug-and-play environment for Medic Mobile's platform and couchapps on the RPi; test sensors and diagnostics with Node.js drivers published for the community to use; and enable a simple, monitor-free setup for non-technical users.
Remote Monitoring for Micro-Hydro Systems: Indonesia
A major issue for non-profits in the rural electrification industry is the difficulty in finding a streamlined way to monitor each project post-construction and short-term supervision to ensure long-term sustainability. Two reasons that contribute greatly to this issue are that non-profits have limited human resources and power generation sites in rural areas are often difficult, expensive, and time consuming to access. In order to address this issue, students in the RMS project will design an affordable and easily maintained micro-controller with SMS capability to log and transmit generation data (voltage and current) as regularly as specified. The hardware will also be complemented by a user-friendly application that will decode, store, and analyze the SMS data.
Education Technology Center: South Africa
iExperience is a technology education academy located in Cape Town, South Africa. They offer 8-week summer programs for US students to learn coding. After a 4-week coding “bootcamp”, students are placed in local tech companies for hands-on, 4-week internships. iExperience also offers coding courses for locals. ESW-Stanford will work with iExperience to design and construct a computer center at a school in a township outside of Cape Town, Parkwood. At this satellite center, iExperience will train teachers on the subject of coding, allowing them to teach their students programming languages and more.
Water-Energy-Food Nexus Solar Irrigation Project: India
For the third consecutive year, in collaboration with Wells for India (UK-based charity), and Sahyog Sansthan (local NGO), ESW-Stanford will design a solar irrigation system that will be suitable for poor smallholder farmers in the region. ESW’s Solar Irrigation Team will work in conjunction with Claro Ventures to design an integrated solar solution for smallholder farmers that will provide a reliable energy source for irrigation and domestic activities. The multi-use capacity of our solar design will not only provide labor and water savings during irrigation, but also encapsulates an entrepreneurial opportunity that will minimize agricultural risk and increase household food security. Technical design and community development aspects of the project will be tackled in the CEE177S/277S class.
